Virtual Reference Desk Abstract

Canadian National Earthquake Hazards Program

Canadian National Earthquake Hazards Program is available in both English and French languages. It is part of the Homepage of the Geological Survey of Canada. Their Seismological Data Archives offer a National Earthquake Database containing epicenter information for Canadian earthquakes since 1980. A database search is available.

More than 1,000 earthquakes are recorded in Canada every year. The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) operates nearly 100 seismographs across the country to detect and locate these events. Together, these instruments make up the Canadian National Seismograph Network. Over a third of a Gigabyte per day of digital network data is acquired, quality controlled, processed, archived, and disseminated in the National Seismology Data Center.
